Collapse of the Mayan Civilization

The Mayans had a strong and complex civilization from A.D. 250 to A.D. 900. At the peak of their strength, between 800 and 900 A.D., this great empire suddenly collapsed. Archeologists have debated about the causes of the collapse; with overpopulation, disease, insect plagues, peasant revolts against the ruling classes (civil wars), and climate change being among the conditions theorized as being responsible. Warfare leading to the balkanization of the culture is said to have effected the fall as well. Recently, the discovery of a major volcanic eruption has increased the probability of weather playing a large role in the collapse. Beginning around 800 A.D. the Yucatan suffered a severe 200-year drought. It is likely that a combination of all of these influences came together to bring about the fall of the Mayan Empire. This 10 page paper examines the possible causes, with an emphasis on warfare and drought. Bibliography lists 12 sources.

According to the Germany World Population Fund, a full one-third of all births is the result of incidental or unwanted pregnancies. With a staggering one billion teenagers right at the brink of their reproductive years, this particular period in time has come to be known as the largest 'youthquake' ever as global officials attempt to quell the perpetual – and highly damaging – population growth. The writer discusses the various impacts of human overpopulation, as well as addresses potential solutions.

Are Non-Verbal Communications In-Born or are They Learned ?

An 8 page look at non-verbal communications (i.e., gestures, motions, batting eyelashes, etc;) and the importance of realizing that different groups of people may interpret them in different ways. The primary focus of this particular report, however, is to analyze the controversy over whether most non-verbal communication activities are in-born traits or learned activities. Various issues and studies are explored to help answer this very question and arguments seem to lean strongly in favor of the 'in-born side' for certain non-verbal communications while some lean strongly in favor of the 'learned' side for other examples of non-verbal communication.
