sparsely populated country comprising a land area
over twice as much as Texas but only twelfth that
state's population. It shares the vast Mongolian
Plateau with portions in China and the Soviet Union
and is the largest land-locked country in the
world, and one of the newest democracies.The
plateau is the traditional home of the Mongol
people. During the 1200s the various Mongol tribes,
united under Chingis Han (Ghengis Kahn), swept
down from the plateau to carve out a great empire
that eventually stretched from China to eastern
