Richard Rodriguez on Affirmative Action

A 4 page research paper that looks specifically at Rodriguez's autobiography, Hunger of Memory, in order to analyze his opinions on affirmative action. Rodriguez has a unique ability to see minority issues from a slightly different perspective. This perspective is enlightening even if one does not agree with his conclusions. For instance, Rodriguez is opposed to affirmative action even though he admits that such social action programs benefited him throughout his academic career. A 15 page paper presenting a literature review and an abbreviated survey-based research seeking attitudes and reasons why Affirmative Action policies appear to be ingrained forever in our society. Research findings indicate that while individuals, both African American and white, believe that the very program tends to extend racial discrimination rather than alleviate it, none wants to be accused of being either 'racist' or uncaring regarding the fate of others. "Anthropology" By Andrea Lee: Conflict

5 pages in length. Andrea Lee's Anthropology delves deeply into the preconceived notions of the inherent separation between black and white. Even though her southern family may live a life entrenched within white mores, the protagonist does not allow them to forget from whence they came, and she does so in such a public fashion that it makes them recoil in contempt and disbelief. The extent to which race, gender and ethnicity play a critical role in Lee's (2003) story is both grand and far-reaching; that the author's central character would go so far as to call her own family 'black' and be openly chastised for it speaks to the degrading tone associated with - and the desire to retreat from - the stigma of race.
