Minority Immigrants Living in Poverty: Education and Employment Factors (Canadian Studies Highlighted)

This is a 10 page paper discussing minority immigrants living in poverty and the relation to education and employment. Within the last decade, increasing high levels of poverty have been recorded in the minority and recent immigrant populations in Canada and the United States. In Canada, recent immigrants make up over 52% of those under the poverty line in urban areas. Traditionally, immigrants coming into Canada whether skilled or unskilled laborers reached the average Canadian income in less than 10 years after their arrival. Educated immigrants previously had attained average or above income. Within the last 10 years however, this has not been the case and educated and professional immigrants are among the poorest population group in Canada along with the uneducated minority immigrants. Part of this is because it had been felt that due to the decline in the labor market, employers do not recognize the foreign credentials of immigrants but many critics also believe that discrimination plays a large part as well. Educational programs within Canada and the United States tend to focus on overcoming the language barrier firstly in addition to upgrading any educational or occupational labor skills. Regardless of the awareness of increased need in this area, many researchers still agree that the greatest barrier for most minority immigrants is racism which unless overcome will continue to reflect in an unequal representation of immigrant groups in poverty.

Natural Gas Industry In The Netherlands During The 1970s

The hypothesis is made that during the oil crises of the 1970s, natural gas acted as a substitute for oil products, which resulted in increased employment in the natural gas industry in the Netherlands. On April 1, 1904, NY's "tenant unions" & organizations went on strike-- refusing to pay rent until their demands were met. In this 12 page research paper, the writer details specific "battles" of the Tenant Movement-- relevant situations, and their outcomes. An overview of 20th century history and the continuing struggle for tenant's rights in New York is presented, as are the efforts of various organizations such as the New York State Tenant and Neighborhood Coalition (NYSTNC). The cases provided demonstrate that when workers' real wages are squeezed by inflation or depression, in addition to conflicts at the point of production, responses occur at household level in the form of struggles in the reproductive sphere (demands for rent reductions, etc.). Rachleff's Hard-Pressed in the Heartland : The Hormel Strike and the Future of the Labor Movement addresses concerns that have been brewing since much of organized labor became a shrinking island in the sea of the U.S. workforce. The 1980s saw a significant change in the manner by which American businesses sought to fill labor positions, with many of them closing down their U.S.-based factories and relocating to Third World countries where the cost of labor is far below the demands of American labor workers. This sudden outflow of jobs caught the labor union off guard and in dire straits; as such, union support began to wane with the serious decline of its power. The internal struggles that existed at Hormel became too much for either side to resolve, ultimately leading to a strike that many believe change the impact of union solidarity forever.
