Nelson (2002) reports that practicing psychotherapists have moved toward an inclusive counseling model, one that takes advantage of multiple theoretical approaches to treating the spectrum of human psychological disorders in practice, or technical eclecticism, as coined by Lazarus & Beutler (1993). Relying on more than one practical approach allows greater flexibility in treating client. Under an eclectic approach, counseling modalities can be applied to simple problems while behavior interventions can be utilized for more complex problems. One of the most challenging aspects of what social workers do with clients is to initially get them into the office, inasmuch as the engagement process inherently segues into resistance. A particularly good example of this resistance to engagement can be found when clients cancel or completely skip their first meeting because they are wholly unable to bring themselves to address the painful issues surrounding the daughter and baby. As tempted as some social workers might be to concede to the family's request that only some of the members actually show up for the session, to do so is to immediately surrender control as the professional and fail to gain the trust of any absent family members. Ethical Dilemma In Counseling: Euthanasia

Whether for or against, counselors readily recognize the ethical components on both sides of the issue and strive to guide their clients in the most humane direction possible. The decision of which way to counsel, however, is where the tremendous gray area exists, inasmuch as there are underlying circumstances that – when fleshed out by an intuitive counselor – can mean the difference between a client fulfilling the wish for euthanasia and deciding instead to live what life is left. With each state left to determine its own legal boundaries where euthanasia is concerned, counselors must equally weigh the lawful and ethical elements when faced with advising clients one way or another.
