For many years, the origin of the HIV virus was unknown. Now, scientists believe that a subspecies of chimpanzee native to west equatorial Africa has been identified as the original source of HIV-1. AIDS was first described in 1981, and the virus responsible for causing it, HIV, was initially reported in 1983.
